Island Transit in Coupeville, WA is seeking an Executive Director for this municipal corporation that provides fare-free public transportation to the 87,000 residents of Island County, two hours north of Seattle. Residents enjoy a coastal lifestyle on two main islands, Whidbey and Camano, which are connected by bridge to the mainland.

ISLAND TRANSIT

Serving the Island County community since 1987, Island Transit is the business name for the Island County Public Transportation Benefit Area (PTBA), a municipal corporation serving Whidbey and Camano Islands and a separate governmental entity from Island County. Island Transit is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors and has an annual budget of $20.9 million, a fleet of more than 60 buses, and a staff of 130 FTEs and 9 PTEs. Departments include Operations, Maintenance, Finance, Administration, Planning & Outreach, and Information Technology. In 2023, Island Transit carried an average of 7,485 passengers on trips each week.

THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible and accountable for the day-to-day leadership, management, and administration of Island Transit and for accomplishing the agency’s mission and vision, as established by the Board. The Executive Director ensures the delivery of reliable, transparent, safe, service-focused transportation to the residents of Island County.

WHY APPLY

If you are looking to lead a public sector organization that is well-supported financially by the public and enjoys both a Board of Directors and staff who are genuinely focused on the agency mission, the Island Transit Executive Director position might be the career-defining opportunity you are looking for. Island Transit serves all of Island County which encompasses picturesque Whidbey and Camano Islands. Island County has its own vibe but is adjacent to major population centers such as the Seattle metro area just a short ferry ride away, and Bellingham and Vancouver B.C. just to the north along Interstate 5. Island Transit is financially sound with more than adequate reserves, and newer facilities and equipment. The Board of Directors and staff are searching for an innovative, dynamic, and results-oriented leader to inspire their team and propel the agency forward.
