The City of Burlington is seeking a Police Chief for this vibrant city of 10,730 located in the heart of the Skagit Valley on Interstate-5 mid-way between Seattle and Vancouver, Canada. Burlington is known for offering small-town livability with all the convenient amenities of a big city. Known as "the Hub" of Skagit Valley, more than 1,200 businesses call Burlington home and as a result, the daytime population can swell to 45,000-60,000 each day.
Incorporated in 1902, the City of Burlington is a full-service city of 4.42 square miles that operates under a Mayor-Council form of government with a 2024 budget of $53 million and a team of 123 FTEs.
THE BURLINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT
The Burlington Police Department works diligently to enhance the quality of life in the Burlington community. The Department is comprised of 31 commissioned officers, 3 records specialists, 1 administrative assistant, 1 evidence technician, and 1 community service officer. The Department operates with a budget of $6.6 million and receives 10,000 – 11,000 calls for service each year. The Police Station is in a campus setting alongside City Hall, the Fire Station, and Municipal Court and the leadership team is cohesive and eager to continue to provide exceptional community policing services.
WHY APPLY
This is a fantastic opportunity to lead a community-centered police agency in beautiful Skagit County, one hour north of Seattle. Burlington is small enough to be nimble and yet accomplishes big things for the community. The Burlington Police Department is a well-managed organization with a young tenured staff and an excellent “can-do” culture with a strong emphasis on community policing. All commissioned supervisors have been promoted from within the agency and within the last 7 years. Police, Fire, Court and City Hall all are a short walk apart in a municipal campus setting. The City has a strong financial outlook with healthy reserves. The City Council and residents want what is best for Burlington and are very supportive of the Police Department and all City services. If you are looking for a friendly, supportive community with a small-town feel and a workplace with dedicated professionals who strive to provide excellent in-person police services, this may be the right opportunity.
