The City of Tumwater, Washington is seeking an Assistant City Attorney for this vibrant community of 28,000 residents located about 60 miles south of Seattle, adjacent to the state capital of Olympia. Tumwater offers the amenities of a larger metropolitan area with the character and accessibility of a smaller community. One of Washington’s oldest cities, Tumwater grew around the Deschutes River and its three waterfalls, which powered early industry and remain defining features of the city today.

Incorporated in 1869, the City of Tumwater is a full-service city operating under a Mayor-Council form of government. The City serves a population of 28,000 across 14.5 square miles with a 2025-2026 biennial budget of $341 million and a team of 253 FTEs across 11 departments. The City strives to support work-life balance and may provide remote work and flexible scheduling opportunities in accordance with policy and business needs.
THE CITY ATTORNEY’S OFFICE
The City Attorney’s Office provides comprehensive legal services to the Mayor, City Council, boards, commissions, and staff; represents the City and its officials in legal proceedings; reviews contracts, agreements, ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents; and oversees the City’s risk management program. All prosecution services are provided by contract with the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. The City Attorney’s office operates with a City Attorney, Assistant City Attorney, and Paralegal.
