The City of Spokane is seeking to hire a Director of Emergency Communications for this  vibrant community of 230,000 and the second-largest city in the state. Tucked into the rolling hills of eastern Washington, Spokane is located on the I-90 corridor just 20 miles from the Idaho border, Spokane serves as the cultural and economic hub of the Inland Northwest. Spokane’s unique blend of regional character, lower cost of living, metro-area amenities, and access to nature has earned it recognition as one of Livability.com’s "Top 100 Best Places to Live" and Forbes’ "Top 25 Places to Retire in 2025."

THE CITY

Incorporated in 1881, the City of Spokane operates under a strong mayor form of government with a seven-member City Council, including a council president and an independently elected mayor. Two council members are elected from each of the City’s three districts and the Council President is elected at large. The City Administrator serves as the City's chief operating officer.

THE DIRECTOR OF EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS

Reporting to the Deputy City Administrator, the Director of Emergency Communications serves as the chief administrator of the municipal emergency communications center and is responsible for leading and managing a high-volume, 24/7 operation that provides 911 call-taking and dispatch services for Police, Fire, EMS, and other public safety agencies. The director oversees all aspects of emergency communications, ensuring rapid, accurate and coordinated responses to public safety incidents.

WHY APPLY

This is a unique opportunity to join the City of Spokane in establishing and expanding Washington State’s newest Emergency Communications Center – Spokane United 911 Network (SUN).  The Director of Emergency Communications is a new position that will oversee the development and launch of SUN as the City’s primary PSAP, a stand-alone City department that serves as the dedicated call-taking and dispatch center for the City’s Fire, Police, and Emergency Medical Services.
