The City of Lakewood is seeking a City Manager for this vibrant community of 63,612 residents located 40 miles south of Seattle along the I-5 corridor. Featuring expansive lakes and stunning views of Mount Rainier, Lakewood offers a rich cultural experience amid a backdrop of natural beauty—all within reach of Puget Sound's big cities. Lakewood is also known as the home to Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM), the largest Army military installation in the western United States and the largest single-site employer in the state of Washington.

THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD

Incorporated in 1996, the City of Lakewood serves a population of 63,612 across 19 square miles with a 2025 budget of $120 million and a team of 222 FTEs. The City operates under a Council-Manager form of government with seven part-time, nonpartisan Councilmembers elected to staggered four-year terms. The City Council elects one of its members as Mayor. City services are provided through a combination of City employees, public and private contracts, and a number of partnerships to include community volunteerism and participation. The seven City departments are: City Manager, Legal, Administrative Services, Municipal Court, Police, Planning and Public Works, and Parks, Recreation & Community Services.

WHY APPLY

This is a great opportunity for a seasoned municipal leader to lead the City of Lakewood. Lakewood is a thriving, urban, South Puget Sound city, characterized by the beauty of its lakes, parks and natural environment, and its vibrant and diverse population. The City is a well-managed organization with an experienced team of department directors and an effective City Council. Historically the Council has demonstrated a positive working relationship with the City Manager and staff. The current City Manager is retiring after twelve years of service. If you are looking to join a goal-focused organization committed to improving community amenities, maintaining public safety, and promoting redevelopment in core commercial areas, this may be the right opportunity for you.
